Customary practices which are abusive to women should be examined and discarded and replaced by practices that bring out the best in women.

Community Development Minister Dame Carol Kidu said an example of such was the payment of “bride price” which had become a gross abuse of good practice.

The gulf between reality and the rhetoric of regionalism within the membership of the Pacific Island Forum (PIF) continues to widen. And some of the recent rhetoric on Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations (PACER-Plus) may hinder, rather than help progress towards deepened trading and economic linkages amongst the 16 members of PIF.

The Australian High Commission is pleased to sponsor the visit of Dr Frieder Roessler, the Executive Director of the Advisory Centre on World Trade Organisation Law (ACWL) to Vanuatu on 19-22 March.

The ACWL is a Geneva-based Non Government Organisation that provides legal services to developing country members of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to participate in the WTO’s dispute settlement system, through training and representational services.

 

Tariff Review Tariff Application Report and Position Paper

The Government’s concern about the high cost of electricity has led to the Utilities Regulatory Authority (URA) undertaking a full review of the level and structure of tariffs for all concession areas. Current concession agreement permits the Government to review and reset tariffs for cause and for the simple reason of passage of time.

 

The URA has put out two sets of papers, Tariff Application Report and Position Paper, to the public for information and consultation.
